I’ve got a feeling that this post will probably prick the conscience of some readers, and hopefully may educate others.

There will, I have not doubt, be those who will shrug it off and continue to use the work of others for their own marketing purposes, with little or no respect for the effort that the originator of the work devoted to its creation.

This can often be the result of over-zealous affiliate marketers, who, in an attempt to beat their competitors, will use whatever content they can find online to promote their affiliate sites.

It can be a fine line, and one that is often blurred – which even I admit to having crossed once when promoting a product for which I was an affiliate. In this particular case I used unchanged content from the merchant’s site, which, at the time, I thought was OK – it wasn’t!! I guess I thought that if it was OK to iFrame the site, it would be acceptable to take the content and use it to promote the product.

The internet is constantly changing the way we do, and promote, business. The rules of engagement can be open to interpretation, and confusion abounds. As Michael Visontay, in his editorial in Australian Author (August 2010), said of the online publishing debate:

“The only point of consensus is that the digital era has changed everything about writing, publishing and reading.”

Those who work in the internet marketing sphere at a professional, ethical level mostly – mostly – understand what is right and what is wrong and conduct their businesses accordingly. Others prefer to employ the ’what I know I can get away with’ strategy.

The Scenario That Prompted This Rant

Recently I launched a particular product, and sent review copies to several colleagues. When I hadn’t heard back from one, I sent a follow up email. The response went along the lines of “Oh I loved it, in fact I sent it off to all of my outsourcers to show them how to do this for me!”

Now tell me – am I right in feeling just a little p’d off? Not only did this person not even purchase the product, but also believed it was OK to distribute it freely (to a group of people who compete with me for business, and who could forward it on to potentially hundreds of their friends).

This person did not pay for it, did not review it, and did not ask my permission to distribute it.

Without doubt, copyright has been infringed, but as most people who publish online know, it is rarely worth the expense to pursue litigation. In most cases pointing out the problem and requesting a desist is all we can do, but common sense tells us that once a digital product has been set free, it is gone forever – including within it lots of links to moneymaking sites is the only consolation.

Many of us with digital products have been affected in this way, and just have to ‘suck it up’. But that doesn’t make it right, or ethical.

Ask Permission

Many internet marketers now have offshore outsourcers who perform a variety of tasks them, and use their clients’ logins at sites like Article Marketing Automation, Linkvana, SubmitYourArticle and Market Samurai. These sites allow this and recognize the need for outsourcer access. But the difference between giving your outsourcers access to these resources and just handing resources over is that

1. You are paying a monthly recurring fee for them, so they make money from you on an ongoing basis, or

2. You ASK PERMISSION for outsourcer access

3. They retain control over their sites and can shut you out if you abuse their service

If you are in any doubt as to whether you can hand over resources to outsourcers, do the right thing and ASK!

Reseller Rights

As I mull over a solution to my problem, I return more and more to the creation of a Reseller Rights version of any lower-price product I create. It will be made quite clear upon purchase, that people who wish to pass such an item on to others, including their outsourcers, will need to pay extra for this right.

I’d be really interested to hear your views.

John Carlton is a master copywriter - the 'most copied copywriter in the world' he says. John has taught thousands of people how to create copy that sells.

I have to admit, I’ve had this problem. I’m not a born sales person, and I really dislike the long, drawn out sales pages that internet marketers use. But that’s me – and if there’s one thing I’ve learned about writing for internet marketers: it is NOT about me.

The reason that sales copy works as well now online as it ever did in TV and print ads, is easily explained – great copywriters get inside the heads of their targets. They are able to stir the emotions of those people, and lead them through a carefully crafted process – to the point that they are oh, so ready to hit the ‘Buy Now’ button.

(In fact statistics show that ‘Add To Cart’ works better, as it ‘Buy Now’ threatens immediate commitment, whereas Add To Cart means that even though the purchase is in their cart, there is no commitment until they are at the checkout. The buttons still lead to the same payment page though!)

John Carlton

John Carlton is a master copywriter – the ‘most copied copywriter in the world’ he says. John has taught thousands of people how to create copy that sells. John believes that everyone can do this – that its simple when you know how. And this is exactly what he says:

The hungry audiences aren’t hiding.

Elbowing your way into the jet-stream of a market is no secret anymore. (The “art” of building a list is now so well-known, it’s being given away for free during launches.)

And once you understand the needs of your target audience, creating or finding a valuable product is flat-out easy.

I’ve always benefited when I decide not to short-cut the learning process. Learning from the best is the best way to take your business to a whole new level, and because I love to write, and I am so involved in the internet marketing community, it is a no-brainer for me to undertake John’s training.

I’ve had the privilege of meeting John several times when he’s ventured away from his US base to come to Australia. The last time was just a few weeks ago, and hearing him break down sales concepts into bite sized and easily digestible pieces was empowering.

Wish me luck, and I’ll share some learnings with you!

James Schramko interviews John Carlton prior to FastWebFormula 2 internet marketing workshop in Sydney.

I’ve been looking forward to FastWebFormula2 for some time, as it is going to give me a fantastic opportunity to share some my latest SEO content writing strategies – with those who have been able to secure a ticket.

But one of the other reasons I am so excited about heading down to Sydney in September, is that some very special guests are flying in from North America, Switzerland and the UK, to add their expertise to this event – James Schramko’s internet marketing workshop.

In my mind though the highlight will be seeing the amazing John Carlton again, and hear him cut through the BS of copywriting, taking people by the metaphorical hand and guiding their commitment finger “Buy Now” button.

John Carlton is a genius copywriter and he can help your business get more profit – just by making some changes to the way you do things.

John has been called “the greatest living copywriter” and “the most copied copywriter”, but what he is, simply, is a master of his craft.

If you are not familiar with John and his work, you will really enjoy this interview (link below), during which he reveals:

The BEST way to research your market

What has changed in online marketing

How to be persuade people to buy right now

>> Listen to the John Carlton interview now!

If there are any tickets left for the high level internet marketing training offered at FastWebFormula, I encourage you to seize the opportunity to hear John Carlton live.

I am a content writer. I write SEO website pages, articles and blog posts. I know how to do this, and I’ve been told I’m pretty good at it.

I also know what I am not – yet. And that is a copywriter. Copywriters are the people who put together those (usually) very long sales letters that are constructed in such a way as to create many buying opportunities throughout their reading. I understand the concepts – I know I need to identify problems, solve them, empathize with people with that problem, make them an offer they can’t refuse, include bonuses and guarantees. I know this.

A little while ago I had the pleasure of meeting the world’s greatest living copywriter, John Carlton. In fact, I had a few beers and dinner with him, and his business partner Stan Dahl in both Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia – and I had in the two weeks leading up to that night, heard John speak in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

John is a gifted speaker, a raconteur, and a really smart man to boot – and demonstrates to his audience that he really knows his stuff.

John says that all copywriters are salespeople, and that those of us who aspire to be good copywriters need to understand what we are selling: “It’s not the thing, it’s the result” he says.

Learning copywriting from John Carlton would be an opportunity not to be missed, so when I heard that John was going to open up a Simple Writing System home mentoring program, I had to get more information – and I will be sharing this with you as information is released.

I think it’s time I stepped out of my comfort zone, and enlisted the support of John Carlton’s Simple Writing System – what about you?
