2012 Resale Rights Version of Internet Marketing Glossary Released
For several years I have issued a free download version of ”What the @%!* Does THAT Mean?” (see right). Responding to customer requests, in 2011 I created a Resale Rights version, entitled simply “Internet Marketing A-Z”. Many of my clients are now offering this version to their clients as a free gift, or are using it as an opt-in incentive on their own websites.
The language of online business is constantly changing, as new tools, strategies and, of course, technology emerge. I don’t expect this Glossary to be every ‘up to date’ but as much as I could, I added whatever terms I had uncovered in the previous 12 months. It is an ongoing adventure in such a dynamic environment!
In issuing the paid version (a modest A$39!), I have assured purchases that updates will be send to them free of charge, and today I have emailed them the download link to the new, 2012 Edition.

Deciphering Internet Marketing Language

Internet marketing language is in a constant flux as new terms are coined along with the emergence of trends and innovations. Beginners and seasoned marketers alike find it necessary to keep abreast of the latest terms as part of their continuing internet marketing education or risk obsolescence in their techniques.
Marketers may have observed that Internet marketing language combines computer speak and traditional marketing lingo. Words such as “webinar” and “email marketing” are some examples of the merger of both worlds. And because the Internet marketer deals largely with the high tech world of computers, “HTML”, “XML” and “CMS” are inevitable. But unless you engage in web development and programming for your business, a basic understanding of these abbreviated terms is often sufficient.
Internet marketing trends
The ongoing development of Internet marketing language depends on current trends and new technologies being used for the business. This explains why a survey showed that words like “Facebook” and “social media marketing” were some of the popular terms being searched in 2010. Video technology is still the hottest tool to hit the Web scene as it enters the mainstream of online marketing. Bloggers, website owners and web developers are expected to upload more videos and use the “iframe” technique to enhance site visitor experience.
While SEO continues to be a major challenge in the New Year, words relating to SEO such as “off-page”, “on-page”, “algorithms” and “deep linking” should form part of every Internet marketer’s vocabulary.
Localized search is an increasing Internet behavior that will experience a major boost from Google Places (an online directory service similar to the Yellow Pages). This trend is leading more Internet marketers to focus on “niche marketing” and to research for “long tail keywords” to boost their website’s search rankings.
Internet sales will also be coming from more mobile users this year as cellphone users are replacing their units with smartphones and tablets. Marketers are expected to respond by utilizing “apps” (applications) for bringing their products to this growing market and to update their websites by activating mobile versions.
Internet marketers are responding to the development of Internet marketing language by compiling their own dictionaries and publishing them online for others to use. A quick survey of available resources shows only a handful that may be considered reliable and easy to use. Newcomers appreciate how the updated versions of dictionaries are free, easy to use and comprehensive. The best ones are those created by seasoned marketers and writers. Free 2011 Internet Marketing Glossary of Terms

Internet marketers start the year by predicting trends, reviewing previous strategies and formulating new ones for the year. Among the tools anyone must have this year is an updated Internet marketing glossary of terms. This handy item provides a quick guide to all the basic terms every beginner should know including the latest words that seasoned marketers must add to their vocabulary.
An Internet marketing glossary of terms contains definitions of all the basic words, phrases and acronyms that are commonly used in the business, and is updated regularly to include additional terminology that emerge as a result of developments in tools and techniques.
Internet marketers share a unique language consisting of computer lingo and marketing speak. While online marketers need not be techno geeks, adopting computer or programming terms is inevitable because the business heavily relies on technology to survive. Traditional marketers may also find that part of their jargon appears in the online marketing glossary, as Internet adaptations. Thus, you’ll find “Internet traffic” instead of “foot traffic”, “email list” in lieu of “client list” or “affiliate” which is the equivalent of a reseller.
A glossary will also have homegrown terms such as search engine optimization and search engine results pages, which are better known by their acronyms “SEO” and “SERP”. These and other web terms are often abbreviated or shortened to facilitate faster communication among marketers. Examples are “webinar” which combines “web” and “seminar” in one word, “iFrame” for “inline frame”, “e-Book” for “electronic book”, and “search bots” for “search engine robots”.
Due to the lack of a formal authority on the subject of Internet marketing, reliability becomes an issue when seeking online resources such as a glossary of terms. Beginners should be especially careful about obtaining the right information or risk serious losses in the business. Track record in marketing and writing skills are probably the best measures of reliability online. Look for a seasoned marketer who not only knows his stuff but is articulate as well.
Internet marketing glossary of terms is a fairly recent development that seasoned practitioners have diligently researched, organized and updated over the years to include new meanings and terms. Some go the extra mile by producing glossaries in PDF format for easy navigability and making specific terms “clickable” for faster reference. Best of all, these are free tools that are available as downloads at some sites. All you need is an email address and you can receive a free copy within minutes.
Free Internet Marketing Dictionary for Beginners

Like most businesses, Internet marketing has its own language that anyone interested in starting an online business must clearly understand. A beginner training program can teach you most of the basic terms but it won’t be as comprehensive as a free Internet marketing dictionary.
Internet Marketing Dictionary – Learning Tool
Most Internet marketing seminars deal with intermediate and advanced topics and assume a general or basic knowledge of terms used in the business. With so much ground to cover at live seminars and limited time for introducing terms, reading up before an event is a must for the participants. Ordinarily, a free Internet marketing dictionary will define words and common principles used by Internet marketers, facilitating early learning by beginners and intermediate marketers. In fact, a dictionary is a great supplement for any level of Internet marketing education.
Participation in discussions
Newbies can get plenty of free information and advice from fellow marketers in forums and discussions. Online forums on Internet marketing and specialized fields such as SEO and keyword research are all over the Web and the quickest way to join in the discussion and not get lost in the comment threads would be to consult a good IM dictionary. By using the right words with confidence, you’ll gain the respect of fellow marketers as well.
Quick reference
Your memory may be sharp but you could use a handy dictionary for refreshing the meaning of some terms that escape you at the time. Specialists in on page SEO or content writing may be well versed in their fields but not in other areas of Internet marketing such as social media marketing where new terms are on the rise. A dictionary serves as easy reference for seasoned marketers.
Of course, you’ll want to get the latest version of an online Internet marketing dictionary if you want to stay ahead in business. New terms and concepts are developed and used everyday while some words take on new meanings with the innovation of solutions and changes in Internet behavior. An updated dictionary should contain the hottest terms and phrases in Internet marketing as well as the current usage of specific words.
An online dictionary can have clickable links to references and reliable authorities on the subject, providing opportunities for deeper understanding. A quick search online will reveal several dictionaries but only those that have been researched, compiled and edited by trusted IM professionals are worth your time.
